GEO vs SEO: what changes and what doesn’t

GEO vs SEO comes down to what you win. SEO wins a position in a list of search results; GEO, generative engine optimization, wins a mention or a citation inside an AI-written answer. They overlap: AI engines search the web before they answer, so strong SEO gets your pages read, and GEO gets them quoted.

The short answer

SEO and GEO are not rivals. SEO decides whether a search engine can find, index and rank your page. Generative engine optimization decides whether an AI engine that read your page, or a page about you, names you in its answer. Most brands need both, because most AI answers start with a web search.

What stays the same

  • Crawling and indexing. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet to appear as a link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Technical SEO is still the entry ticket.
  • Useful, original content. Both reward pages that answer the question better than anything else.
  • Authority. Engines lean on sources that already rank and that other sites trust.
  • No shortcuts. Google says no special files or markup are needed for its AI features, and tricks that try to steer models are fragile.

What changes with GEO

  • You compete for a sentence, not a slot. An answer may name three brands. Fourth place is the same as no place.
  • Other people’s pages matter more. Answers are often built from reviews, lists and threads. In our October 2026 study of 150 AI answers, reddit.com appeared in 22 answers and youtube.com in 13.
  • Evidence beats keywords. In the KDD 2024 GEO study, adding quotations lifted a source’s share of the answer by 40.9% and statistics by 30.6%, while keyword stuffing lowered it by 8.3%.
  • Lower-ranked pages can win. In the same study, when every source was rewritten, citing sources lifted the fifth-ranked page’s visibility by 115%.
  • Answers vary. The same prompt can give different answers on different runs, so GEO is measured as a trend, not a snapshot.

How to plan GEO and SEO together

  1. Start from questions, not keywords. For each topic, list the prompts buyers ask an AI and the searches they type into Google. They overlap, but not fully.
  2. Fix the technical base once. Crawlability, speed, indexing and clean structured data help both.
  3. Write answer-first pages. A direct answer at the top serves Google’s snippets and AI answers alike. Our AI SEO and GEO guide shows the page pattern.
  4. Earn the sources engines cite. For each prompt, check which sites the answer leans on and whether they mention you.
  5. Measure both. Rankings and clicks for SEO; visibility, share of voice and citations for GEO. See how to measure AI visibility.

Which one should you prioritize

If your site has technical problems or ranks for nothing, fix SEO first: engines can’t quote what they can’t find. If you already rank but AI answers name your competitors, GEO is where the gap is. Many businesses sit in the second group, which is why we plan and measure both together.

Questions

Is GEO replacing SEO?

No. Most AI engines search the web before they answer, so pages that are indexed and rank well are more likely to be read and quoted. GEO adds a goal on top of SEO: being named in the answer, not only ranked below it.

Can good SEO alone get me into AI answers?

It helps but doesn’t guarantee it. An engine can read your page and still name a competitor that more reviews, lists and threads recommend. GEO closes that gap with answer-first content and mentions on the sources engines cite.

What is the difference between GEO, AEO and SEO?

SEO ranks pages in search results. GEO (generative engine optimization) and AEO (answer engine optimization) are two names for earning mentions and citations inside AI-written answers. GEO and AEO describe the same work.

What is GEO SEO?

“GEO SEO” usually means doing both at once: SEO so engines can find and rank your pages, and GEO so AI answers quote and name you. It is one plan, not two.
