Guide · AEO basics

What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of making your brand the one AI engines name when people ask a question. Engines such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Gemini write one answer instead of listing links, so AEO aims for a mention or a citation inside that answer, not a position on a results page.

What is AEO, in plain words

An answer engine is any tool that replies to a question with a written answer rather than a list of links. ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Microsoft Copilot, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode all work this way. When a buyer asks one of them “which CRM is best for a small agency?”, it names a few products and links a few sources. Everything else is invisible.

Answer engine optimization is the work of being one of those few names. It covers what the engines read about you, how clearly your own pages answer the question, and whether the other sites the engines trust mention you at all.

AEO, GEO and AI SEO: one discipline, three names

You will see three names for the same work. AEO is the oldest; some people first used it for Google’s answer boxes and voice assistants. Generative engine optimization (GEO) came from a 2023 research paper on AI-written answers. AI SEO is what most marketers type into Google. The tactics overlap almost completely, so pick the name your team already uses and focus on the work.

How answer engines decide what to say

Most answer engines search the web before they reply. Google says both AI Overviews and AI Mode may use a “query fan-out” technique: they run several related searches on subtopics and stitch the results into one answer. ChatGPT does the same when it searches. So the engine is not reading your homepage alone. It reads whatever ranks for the searches it ran, which is often a review site, a list of the best options, or a forum thread.

That is why AEO reaches beyond your own site. In our October 2026 study of 150 AI answers, the engines drew on 593 different domains across 150 answers, and reddit.com alone appeared among the sources of 22 of them. If the threads and lists an engine reads never mention you, it has nothing to repeat.

What AEO work looks like

  1. Choose the questions. List the prompts your buyers ask, such as “best accountant for freelancers in Austin”, and group them by product and stage.
  2. See today’s answers. Ask each prompt on each engine several times. Record whether you are named, in what position, how you are described and which sources are cited.
  3. Answer the question on your own site. Put a direct, two-sentence answer at the top of the page, then the detail. Engines lift passages that stand on their own.
  4. Back every claim. Numbers, named sources and quotations make a page easier to cite. The GEO study found that adding quotations raised a source’s share of the answer by 40.9% and adding statistics by 30.6%.
  5. Earn the sources you are missing. Reviews, directory listings, comparison articles and honest community answers on the sites the engines already cite.
  6. Measure the change. Track the same prompts over time, and compare them with control prompts you did not work on. Our guide to measuring AI visibility explains each number.

AEO and SEO work together

AEO does not replace SEO. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet before it can appear as a link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. If your pages cannot be crawled, no amount of AEO helps. The difference is the goal: SEO stops at the ranking, while AEO asks whether the answer actually names you. Who needs AEO

  • Software and service companies whose buyers ask AI to shortlist vendors before they ever visit a website.
  • Local businesses whose customers ask “best dentist near me” or “boxing gym in Williamsburg” and act on the first name they hear.
  • Agencies that need to show clients where they stand in AI answers and prove that the work moved it.

Questions

What does AEO stand for in SEO?

AEO stands for answer engine optimization. In SEO it means optimizing content so AI engines and answer boxes name and cite your brand when they answer a question, rather than only ranking your page in a list of links.

Is AEO different from GEO?

Not in practice. Answer engine optimization (AEO) and generative engine optimization (GEO) both describe earning mentions and citations in AI-written answers. GEO comes from a 2023 research paper; AEO is the older term. The work is the same.

How long does answer engine optimization take?

Engines that search the live web can pick up new pages and listings within weeks of them being indexed, but answers usually take 60 to 90 days to change in a way you can measure across repeated runs.

Can I do AEO without changing my website?

Partly. Many answers are built from other sites, so reviews, listings and mentions elsewhere matter a lot. But a page that answers the question clearly is the easiest thing for an engine to quote, so most AEO work includes your own pages too.
