How to rank in AI Overviews and AI Mode
Learning how to rank in AI Overviews starts with Google’s own rule: a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in Search. Beyond that, Google says no special optimization is needed. Pages that answer the question directly, cover its follow-up questions and are trusted by other sites are the ones Google links.

What AI Overviews and AI Mode are
AI Overviews are the AI-written summaries at the top of many Google results pages, with links to the pages they draw on. AI Mode is Google’s conversational search, where the whole result is an AI answer you can ask follow-up questions of. Both are built on Google’s search index, which is why classic SEO still matters so much here.
What Google says you need
Google’s documentation for site owners is short and direct. There are “no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary.” To be shown as a supporting link, a page must be “indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet”. And you “don’t need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear in these features.”
How Google picks the pages it links
Google says both features “may use a ‘query fan-out’ technique”: they run several related searches across subtopics and data sources, then build one response. A question like “best CRM for a small agency” might fan out into searches about pricing, integrations and reviews. Each of those searches can surface a different page, so a site that covers the follow-up questions has more chances to be read.
Google’s AI answers also list fewer sources than other engines. In our October 2026 study of 150 AI answers, AI Overviews listed 3.7 domains as sources per answer on average and AI Mode only 2.5, against 16.6 for ChatGPT. With so few links per answer, each one is worth more, and the pages that already rank well for the fan-out searches have the edge.
How to rank in AI Overviews and AI Mode: a checklist
- Make sure the page is indexed. Check it in Google Search Console and fix crawl errors, noindex tags and blocked resources.
- Keep it snippet-eligible. Don’t use nosnippet or a very short max-snippet on pages you want quoted.
- Answer first. Put a direct answer to the question in the first two sentences under a matching heading.
- Cover the fan-out. Add sections for the follow-up questions buyers ask: price, alternatives, who it suits, how it works.
- Add evidence. Numbers, named sources and quotations raised a page’s share of the answer in the KDD 2024 GEO study.
- Keep it current. Show a visible date and update pages when prices or facts change.
- Earn mentions elsewhere. Reviews, lists and community answers that rank for the same searches.
Which sources Google’s AI answers lean on
Community and video sites appear often in Google’s AI answers. In our study, 14 of the 25 AI Overviews listed reddit.com, youtube.com, linkedin.com, g2.com or a Wikipedia page among their sources, more than any other engine. Third-party studies point the same way; Otterly’s 2026 study found Reddit and YouTube together made up 78.2% of the social media citations in AI search. If your buyers discuss your category on those sites, your brand needs to be part of the discussion.
| Engine | Domains per answer |
|---|---|
| Google AI Mode | 2.5 |
| Google AI Overviews | 3.7 |
| Gemini | 4.1 |
| Microsoft Copilot | 4.5 |
| Claude | 5.7 |
| ChatGPT | 16.6 |
How to measure it
Search Console shows AI Overviews traffic inside your normal search data, but it doesn’t show whether your brand is named in the answer. For that, ask your target questions on Google repeatedly and record whether an overview appears, whether it names you and which pages it links. Our guide to measuring AI visibility explains the numbers, and the AI SEO and GEO guide covers the other engines.
Cited tracks AI Overviews, AI Mode and Google Search for your prompts, finds the pages Google links instead of yours, and ships the content and technical fixes that close the gap.
Questions
Do I need schema markup to appear in AI Overviews?
No. Google says no special schema.org structured data, files or markup are required for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Structured data still helps search engines understand a page, so keep it accurate, but it isn’t a ticket into the answer.
Can I opt out of AI Overviews?
Google’s controls work at the snippet level: a page that uses nosnippet (or noindex) can’t be shown as a supporting link, and max-snippet or data-nosnippet limit what Google can show from it. Those controls also apply to normal results, so use them only on pages you don’t want quoted.
How many sites does AI Mode link?
In our October 2026 study, AI Mode linked 2.5 domains per answer on average, and 3 of its 25 answers linked none. With so few links, each page it does link carries much of the answer.
